If you grew up in the 80’s, you should be very familiar with
the above picture. Man, do yall remember the porch? Especially in the
summertime, when school was out; everybody and they mama would be outside. I’m speaking about a time when kids would stay
outside from sun up to sun down and there was one rule; you better not let the
street lights beat you home! That meant if you planned on going outside the
next day, you would need to be home before the street lights came on.
I can recall those hot summer days, running in and out of
the house, to refresh myself with a nice cold glass of water, on numerous occasions.
My grandmother was notorious for telling me and my brother this, “Yall better
make up yall mind; either you are staying in the house or outside”. I think she
was annoyed at the flies and mosquitoes that would follow us in the house.
Now that I have kids of my own, I find myself saying the
same thing to them. But often, even as a man, I hear those same words but these
days, they don’t come from my grandmother. I hear this still quiet voice
telling me, “MJ, you are going to need to make up your mind”. “Either you are
going to trust me and do things my way, or you can continue to trust others and
do things their way”. As the voice continues, “MJ, what’s it going to be?” “You refuse to forgive people that have violated
your self- respect a couple of times, but you ask me to forgive you, when you
violate my laws daily!”
What am I getting at? If Jesus is Lord, serve Him, BUT if
you are God, serve yourself! I hear all this talk about, “I’m doing me”. What
about doing what Jesus ask you to do? It’s
funny how ministers preach a deceased person into Heaven, when they lived life
like the devil. Its strange how we all want Heaven but nobody wants to die. Bottom
line- You can’t be your own boss in this life, and serve God in the next life.
